It was Grand Final weekend for the two major football codes in Australia over the weekend. While I only really follow the AFL, I did also watch the NRL final and must say that I did enjoy the game. The AFL final was a cracking game and the West Coast Eagles had a great 1-point victory. Not having a team in the Grand Final allowed me to sit back and watch the game as an unbiased outsider and both teams put on a great show. The absolute low-light of the game however was the behaviour of some of the West Coast players after the game. Every player on the winning team gets a medallion which is presented to them from a young (I mean very young as in under 10 young) player from the Auskick league. Many of the WC players completely ignored the kids presenting the medals and a large proportion of them did not shake the kids hands. If the medals had been presented by an adult this sort of ignorant and impolite behaviour on the part of the players would be unacceptable but WC present the picture that its OK to be rude to the kids. At one point a player literally grabbed the medal from the young players' hands and started his victory gyrations, my 6 yo turned to me and asked me why the man 'snatched' his medal; there is no answer, they are just rude. It's important to note this behaviour was not across the board, many WC players accepted there medals with dignity, then celebrated a great sporting moment and the same time as allowing the kids one of the great moments in their lives.
What are your plans for the holiday weekend?
Did Vox suddenly get country-centric while I wasnt looking? Is there a global three day weekend that I dont know about?
Dud QOTD! C'mon Vox, remember the rest of the world!
What song or lyrics are stuck in your head at the moment? What album is it from?

It's that flipping "Ask a Ninja" theme. Its going around and around in my head and it wont stop. I made the stupid mistake of making it a ring tone on my phone!
I look forward to ringing you soon!
Show us something that takes your breath away.
When we pulled the truck into this fire it was a full size fuel storage depot burning well and spreading fast. This was only an exercise but please believe me, when we got to the end of it I was puffing like a broken down train.
No rookies were cooked in the course of this exercise!
Only 3 more sleeps and then the river fishing season is open here on the Victorian trout fishing rivers. Winter is a long bitter cold bastard of a thing and the struggling fly angler has to make do with a selection of wide open wind blown lakes when really all he wants to do is get back to the rivers. New batches of nymphs, carefully tied during the winter have been arranged in the fly box according to color, size and weight, dry fly boxes have been pulled out of the storage drawers in anticipation of the possibility (however remote) of the odd early hatch. Best of all the anticipatation of getting back into the mountains among the trees and into the small streams is rising to fever pitch. Just 3 more sleeps and I can hardly wait that long! It's been a long winter.
So at lunch today I quickly checked to see what the Vox Hunt was and then grabbed the trusty camera phone to see what I could find and to stretch the legs. Wandering around the Southbank, river and Fed Square district it occurred to me that Melbourne has gotten really cool and I really hadnt noticed.
For years I have worked at client sites all over the place, often travelling interstate and internationally for long periods of time. So while I have had an office address in the city I've not actually spent any time IN the city. To be honest I tend to go out of my way to avoid the city and definitely I try to avoid the office. Over the years I've developed a really bad impression of the city, dirty, uninspiring and just plain dull!
Recently though Ive started a new role that has had me based in the city office for a few weeks and I've been getting out and about and walking in the city more regularly and I'm really very impressed. It's like the city has really come out of it's shell, it's all spruced up and shiny. Perhaps it's a hangover from the Commonwealth Games or perhaps it's finally that the large developments at Fed Square and across Southbank are largely complete but the city is looking really great. Perhaps it's just Spring time.
What jumps out at me is that Melbourne is becoming a photographers paradise. I snapped a few quick shots on the phone-cam today just for my Vox Hunt, but looking around I think its time to schedule a day out in the city with the good camera gear and see if I cant get some good shots.
Take a picture of something heart-shaped.
This sculpture by an artist named Deb Halpern, and from memory the title of this work is "Angel". Angel was recently moved from the front of the National Gallery of Victoria to a spot on the Yarra River. The new installation is magnificent and really shows off Angel. This photo only really shows the heats for the purposes of the Vox Hunt.
Find out more about Angel and find some backgrounf info and pictures at Wikipedia.
When I first learnt to play guitar the funkiest thing I could play was "Proud Mary" by Creedance. I've long since given up hope of ever playing well but watching guys like this is heartbreaking. At the same time I am in such awe with their talent I'm not sure that it makes me want to go and pick up my guitar or go and burn it. Justin Kings' guitar work is just astounding. I love it!
