Only 3 more sleeps and then the river fishing season is open here on the Victorian trout fishing rivers. Winter is a long bitter cold bastard of a thing and the struggling fly angler has to make do with a selection of wide open wind blown lakes when really all he wants to do is get back to the rivers. New batches of nymphs, carefully tied during the winter have been arranged in the fly box according to color, size and weight, dry fly boxes have been pulled out of the storage drawers in anticipation of the possibility (however remote) of the odd early hatch. Best of all the anticipatation of getting back into the mountains among the trees and into the small streams is rising to fever pitch. Just 3 more sleeps and I can hardly wait that long! It's been a long winter.
An outstanding day at Millbrook yesterday, sunshine, moving fish and good company, it dosnt get any better. A recent photo illustrates just how nice this spot is, so much better than my blather can. As an aside, the cabin was recently used as a filming location for the "Nightmares & Dreamscapes" series that was shown in the USA.
What do you usually do on Sunday?
My fave Sunday morning at home involves not getting woken up by the kids fighting and staying asleep until I CHOOSE to wake up...ahhhh luxury! Throw some clothes on and up to the fire station for a couple of hours training followed by a quick BBQ lunch. Back home to the family and hopefully SWMBO is not working and we can get out and do something (anything) with the squidlies for a few hours. If I'm exceedingly lucky my AFL team, Essendon, are playing a Sunday afternoon match and I can lock myself in the kitchen and spend a few hours cooking something spicy, drinking a bottle of red and listening to the footy....boy stuff!
HOWEVER, if all is right with the world though I dont wake up at home but wake instead in a tent beside a river. The sound of the water and the birds outside generally wakes me up at dawn so I can sneak out for a fish. Pull on some warm clothes, on with the waders, wander down to the river and watch for rises for bit. May be cast a fly or two, have a wander through the bush upstream and finally get back to camp after a couple of hours. Thats a perfect Sunday morning!
